Sample from Harsh, a data analyst with 2 years at a retail chain in Mumbai, in a job switch interview

About 1 min 145 words

  1. Presentwho I am now

Good morning, I'm Harsh Vora, a data analyst with two years at a retail chain in Mumbai. I work in SQL and Power BI every day, and I use Python when Excel gets too slow.

  2. Pastwhat I have done

Every Monday, the store managers received twelve separate Excel reports. I rebuilt them as one Power BI dashboard connected to our sales database. The reports now refresh on their own, and the team saves around fifteen hours a week. A month later, the regional head used the same dashboard to stop a discount scheme that was losing money in two stores. That was the first time I saw my work change a decision.

  3. Futurewhy this role

I'd like to move into product analytics, where I can work closely with a product team on user behaviour. Your company has the data and the questions, and I want to grow into that kind of role.

Short version

Three sentences, for when you're nervous.

I'm Harsh, a data analyst with two years in retail, using SQL, Power BI and Python. I replaced twelve weekly Excel reports with one dashboard and saved about fifteen hours a week. I'd like to move into product analytics.

3 things to include

  • Tools in one line

SQL and Power BI or Tableau together is what most analyst panels listen for.

  • A decision that changed

Say what someone did differently because of your report. That is the real measure of an analyst.

  • Hours or rupees

Fifteen hours a week, or a scheme stopped, puts a value on your work.

2 things to avoid

  • Describing charts, not findings

Saying you 'made dashboards' tells little. Say what the dashboard showed and who acted on it.

  • Claiming machine learning

Unless you have built a model, leave it out. One follow-up will expose it.
